Week 8 -Mashups and API

It is really new terminology and technology for me, even though I didn't realize that tourist sites and hotel reservation sites that I am using are very frequentlly used mashups. It took me a while to understand how mashup brings two or more Web application together to create new information services. the all the combination of several programs to bring up the third.Weather bonk uses API to combine several web applications such as Google map, Microsoft virtual earth, Yahoo Geocoding, Yahoo map and weatherbugs etc. They are so visual that they can attract and convince patrons powerfully.
In shifted librarin blog, it said that US senate voted to slap the pentagon's Total Information Awareness(TIA)program which Bush administration thinkg is useful for national security to protect the privace of Americal citizens. The Annoyed Librarian
said that privacy is liberal value based on liberal vaues of individual autonomy and tolerane. He/she thinks that privacy allows people to think freely withough interferece politicaly. He thinks that in privacy the personal and the political should not be intertwined. He/she criticize the ALA only concerns about political issues disregarding professional and privacy issues.

Week 7 - Podcasting and Online Hosted Video

How did I feel about the experience of using YouTube and what you think about this service. Do you see any potential uses for Podcasting in the library? If so what and why?
It is one of the greatest social networking tools that make people easily engage in sharing opinions and vidoes. It encourage peple to meet others in other environment, to read and share opinions, and be a part of community. It is the interactive features of YouTube that people allow to communicate and to pay attention visullay to what the otehr try to deliver. YouTube and Podcasting draw users into the experience and the contents so that they improve visula literacy. Podcasting helps library users understand the subject matters. It has the potential to expose library users to new skill easily without going through reading materials or accessing necessary information by themselves. It will improve users' information literacy more easily.

Week 6 : Online Photo Sharing

How might online photo Sharing be used in my library?
I like flickr. It is easy to use and uploading a picture is very transparent and simple. I can use the flickr to upload staff pictures or the hospital event and promote the hospital outside people. With Online photo Sharing, library can introduce what newly purchased book and resources are so that hospital employees can have more clear idea about the library that is not still used by large portion of the employees, medical staff and patients.

Week 5: Office tool optional assignment

Week 5: Web Office Tools

Is this the future of all software products? What do you think?
Google Docs & spreadsheets is easy to have people collaborate on the projects, but I should be on internet to access the document. Zoho makes collaboration easy, letting people share their documents or post them on the Web. But If we are off-line, we need to save documents on Word or Excel. There is also confidentiality and security issues with Google Doc, Zoho and other web document sites. I have to be very selective of what I post. So I don't think these web documents is not the future of all software products.

MLA WEEK 4: Social Bookmarking

Create a blog post about your experience and thoughts about this tool. Can you see the potential of this tool for research assistance? Or just as an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere

I think this social bookmarking is a great experience ! I enjoyed reading what other people thought about their bookmarking. I made my del.icio.us account to save my own bookmark and I feel like I deposit money in my bank account. I can access them anywhere a computer is available. I bookmarked the resources for my profession, financial management and homelife. Yes, I can see the great potential of this tool for research assistance. Tagging cost users little in time and effort to find research resouces and offer creativity to categorize their own data. Users or researcher can organize their digital collection, categorize their contents, build classification system.

Week 3: Social Networking Tools

1.How can social networking be used by MLA to connect members.

Social networking can be used to connect memeber of MLA by posting their opinions about the current technology and their ideas about improving information delivery by the medical librarians. If the identity of the person is verified by the membership of the MLA, I think the communication in the social networking is more accountable and reliable so that I don't need to be concerned about exposing myself to the unknown world.

2. Should your library have a Facebook or Myspace page?

No, I don't thinks so yet. First my hospital library has limited users. There are not many physicians and medical staff who utilize library facility to get the information they need. (I think they get their information by themselves). There are quite a few physicians who still want to be informed in a printed not in an electronic format about recent journal articles.
Second, it is quite certain that the security system would stop the Facebook in our hospital network. It is not easy to make Facebook go through based on the reasons that it can help employers socialize or share their ideas in the workplace. Even if it is good to know who is our colleague, the administration determines that security issue far outweigh the value of the communication between the colleague.

3. Are there privacy concerns for individuals when using socila networking sites?

Yes, there are. I don't like strangers read or know what I am doing in my private lives, especially when I talk with my friends. I think it lets the stranger exert influence over one's life about what they think and how they live. It is dangerous for teenagers who are very susceptible to views and perception of their peers. Too much exposure would lead to psychological vulnerabiltiy.

MLA CE WEEK 2

What is the difference between a blog and a wiki? What sort of things might be better suited for a blog and better suited for a wiki?
Wiki is a kind of book written by several authors. People can contribute their ideas and store the documents and later others can edit the contents of the book. If there are a project in a library where many people need to share the parts of the project like library magazines or newsletters, they can collaborate to make one by storing and editing their ideas online without asking for revisions.
Blog is to report of unique perspectives of certain subjects. Anyone can be a news reporter in their own blog. He want to share the news on the web and collection fo the post. People can respond by commneting blogger's ideas. It is a two way communication between a blogger and readers. In solo librarian library, Blog is a better option to promote the library events and market library services.

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

How am I going to use a blog in my library? As a librarian who was recently hired in the library where users were rarely introduced to emerging technology by a librarian, I want to prensent a blog as a way to communicate with our users. I can use a blog to market library and let them post their information need and their suggestion about library.
I am really grateful about David's instruction about how to use pubmed RSS feed to send updated information to the doctors by setting limit to specific journals. I also love the RSS feed for TOC in pubmed. I can send updated TOC as soon as they are ready. I agree with many of you that I should be more selective in subscribing to RSS feed because I am always swamped with tons of updates.
